In case you prefer watching a video tutorial, here's a 5-minute tutorial from XYZ Lab's Youtube Channel. Enjoy!
What you need to get started with installing GA4 using GTM
Step 1: Access Data Streams
Step 2: Installing GA4
Step 3: Copy Measurement ID
Step 4: Create New Tag
Step 5: Name New Tag
Step 6: Tag Configuration
Step 7: GA4 Configuration
Step 8: Add Measurement ID
Step 9: Add Trigger
Step 10: Save Tag
Step 11: Submit and Publish
Before we get started with installing GA4 through GTM, of course, you will need access to these accounts. Just in case you haven't, you can check out the tutorial from Google on how to set up these accounts:
Now that we got that out of the way, let's get to the real deal.
1. Navigate to your GA4 Account. Click on Admin
2. Navigate to Property (Second Column). Click on Data Streams
Google Analytics will display the websites that you created the GA4 property for. Click on the property where you want to install the GA4 Pixel.
Google Analytics will display the property details. Copy the Measurement ID.
Navigate to your GTM account. Click on Add a new tag.
Name the new tag in a way that you can understand.
Click on Tag Configuration. Tag configuration means we will select the tool that we are going to install on the back of our website.
Select the tag type: Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration.
Paste the Measurement ID that was copied from Google Analytics in Step 3 in the Measurement ID box.
Triggering determines when the tool is going to be active on the website. To configure the trigger:
1. Click on Triggering
2. Select All Pages
3. Click Add
This is how the tag should look when it is completed. In this example, we have created a new tag that is relevant to a GA4 account with the specific Measurement ID, and this GA4 account will be active on all our website pages (which is our triggering). Don't forget to save the configuration.
Submit and publish the GTM to send the changes to the live version of the website.
That's it! See how easy it was to set up the GA4 using GTM? Your Google Analytics account is now up and running and will provide you with plenty of insights for you to sharpen your marketing strategies!
