Frequently Asked Questions on Changing Campaign Conversion Goals in Google Ads
How do I change the conversion goals in a Google Ads campaign?
Open your Google Ads dashboard and navigate to Campaigns → Settings → Goals. Click Edit conversion goals, then choose which conversion actions you want this campaign to optimize for. You can assign goals such as purchases, sign-ups, or calls, and click Save to confirm the changes.
What’s the purpose of having campaign-specific conversion goals?
Campaign-specific goals allow you to control which conversions matter most for each campaign. For instance, a brand awareness campaign might optimize for website visits, while a sales campaign tracks transactions. This separation helps Google Ads optimize more accurately toward your desired outcomes.
Can I switch conversion goals without affecting historical data?
Yes. Changing or removing conversion goals does not delete your historical data. Google Ads continues to show past conversion metrics, but future optimizations will be based on your new goal setup. It’s best to make changes between learning phases to minimize performance fluctuations.
How do conversion goals interact with automated bidding strategies?
Conversion goals directly guide Smart Bidding algorithms. When you modify them, strategies like Maximize Conversions, Target CPA, or Target ROAS adjust their optimization targets accordingly. Allow the system a few days to relearn and re-optimize after making updates.
