Frequently Asked Questions on Checking if Google Ads Tag is on the Website
What is a Google Ads tag and why is it important?
The Google Ads tag (also known as the global site tag or conversion tracking tag) is a small piece of JavaScript code added to your website. It tracks user activity and conversions — such as purchases, form submissions, or sign-ups — allowing Google Ads to measure campaign effectiveness and optimize bidding.
How can I check if the Google Ads tag is installed on my website?
There are several easy methods to verify your tag installation:
Use Google Tag Assistant (Legacy or Companion):
Install the Tag Assistant Chrome Extension.
Visit your website and click the extension icon.
Look for “Google Ads Conversion Tracking” or “Global Site Tag (gtag.js)” in the detected tags list.
Check via Google Tag Manager (if using GTM):
Open Google Tag Manager → Preview Mode → Enter your site URL.
Navigate through the pages and confirm your tag is firing correctly.
Inspect website code manually:
Right-click → View Page Source.
Search (Ctrl+F) for AW- followed by your conversion ID (e.g., AW-123456789).
What if the Google Ads tag is not firing properly?
If your tag isn’t firing:
Confirm it’s placed between <head> tags or via Google Tag Manager.
Make sure your Conversion ID and Label are correct.
Check if your website uses a cookie consent tool blocking tag firing.
Verify there are no duplicate tags causing data conflicts.
Test again using Google Tag Assistant after adjustments.
What are best practices for maintaining your Google Ads tag?
Always use Google Tag Manager for scalable tag management.
Review tag firing behavior after site redesigns or migrations.
Use conversion debugging tools regularly.
Avoid placing multiple tracking scripts for the same conversion event.
Keep a record of conversion IDs and tag placements for future troubleshooting.
