Frequently Asked Questions on How to setup Content Groups in Google Analytics

How do I create a Content Group parameter?

Use Google Tag Manager or your site’s code to send an event parameter such as content_group or page_category with every page view. GA4 will then capture this value for analysis.

Can I create Content Groups without Google Tag Manager?

Yes, but you must add the custom parameter manually in your gtag code. GTM makes it easier because you can automate grouping using URL rules.

How long does it take for Content Groups to appear in reports?

New custom dimensions start populating data after a few hours. GA4 does not backfill historical data.

Can I use Content Groups in Looker Studio?

Yes, once GA4 collects the custom dimension, it becomes available in Looker Studio. You can group content, compare performance, and build dashboards.
