Frequently Asked Questions on Bounced Sessions in Looker Studio Reports

How is a "Bounced Session" defined in Google Analytics?

A "bounced session" is defined as a single-page visit to a website where the user leaves without interacting with any other pages on the site. This means that the visitor arrives on a page and exits without clicking on any links, filling out forms, or engaging with any content that would indicate further exploration of the site.

The exact definition can vary based on your analytics setup, but it often includes criteria like session duration or interaction depth.

What is the difference between a "bounced session" and a "single-page session"?

While both terms refer to sessions with minimal interaction, a "bounced session" specifically implies that the user left without engaging further, whereas a "single-page session" refers to any session in which a user visits only one page on the website, but does not necessarily imply a bounce. For example, if a user reads content, watches a video, or fills out a form on that single page, it would still be considered a single-page session but not a bounced session.

How can I reduce the bounced sessions for my site or app?

Here are some effective methods to reduce your bounced sessions:

  • Improve content relevance and depth and update regularly

  • Target quality traffic

  • Personalize landing pages according to target segments

  • Enhance user experience by improving UI/UX design and perform mobile optimization

  • Create a clear and user-friendly navigation structure

  • Add internal links

  • Utilize clear CTAs

  • Engage users with visuals (images, videos, infographics)

  • Review and address technical issues

  • Implement A/B testing to compare different versions of pages, CTAs, or content
